House Minority Leader Tony McCombie filed a House Resolution on May 21 to address challenges faced by home daycares in Illinois. The resolution aims to make childcare more affordable for working families by examining ways to reduce regulatory and licensure burdens on daycare homes.
The topic is significant as many families are struggling with rising costs, and access to affordable childcare is a key concern. By targeting the regulations that affect home daycares, the proposal seeks to increase accessibility while lowering expenses for parents.
House Resolution 923 calls on the Illinois Department of Early Childhood (IDEC) to study how licensing and regulatory requirements can be eased for daycare homes. The resolution also requests that IDEC submit a report with its findings to the General Assembly by December 31, 2027.
“This is an effort to finding a solution to the unaffordable costs of childcare in our state that working families have to juggle,” said McCombie. “Finding ways to reduce the cost of daycares but increasing access and reducing burdens on home daycares is an essential part of a solution.”
McCombie, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 89th House District, replacing previous state representative Andrew Chesney, according to the Illinois General Assembly.
Observers will watch how IDEC responds and whether changes proposed in their future report could lead lawmakers toward policy adjustments affecting both providers and families.
