House Minority Leader Tony McCombie hosted the Illinois House Republicans’ annual Women to Watch event at the state Capitol on April 23. The gathering brought together women from across Illinois for a day focused on recognition, celebration, and networking.
The event aims to highlight female leaders identified by House Republican lawmakers in their communities. This year’s program featured a panel discussion with McCombie and Iowa Lieutenant Governor Chris Cournoyer. The two discussed their experiences in state legislatures, their paths to leadership, and influences that shaped their careers. Cournoyer is known for her advocacy of STEM education and efforts to expand hands-on learning opportunities for students.
During her remarks, McCombie said, “It’s meaningful because it brings incredible women together under one roof, women who are showing up every day and making Illinois stronger, one community at a time.” She added, “The women at this event are here because of their leadership, commitment, and impact—it matters. It makes a difference. Today is a day to recognize them and say thank you.”
Among those honored were Hannah Davekos from Genoa and Caitlin Benes from Kirkland—both residents of McCombie’s 89th District. According to Ballotpedia, McCombie was elected as a Republican in 2023 to represent the district after Andrew Chesney vacated the seat according to Ballotpedia.
McCombie announced plans for an additional summer event dedicated to recognizing more leaders within her district.
