House Minority Leader Tony McCombie announced on May 22 that she is sharing information about sweet corn in anticipation of the fifth annual Sweet Corn Day Celebration. The event is scheduled for August 1 at her district office in Savanna, Illinois.
McCombie provided details about how sweet corn is pollinated, explaining that the plant relies on wind for pollination. She said, “The tassel of the plant contains the pollen which is the male reproductive part—whereas the silk strands at the base of the cob is the female reproductive part. When two plants grow close to each other, the wind carries the pollen from the tassels to the silk, effectively pollinating the plant.” McCombie also shared additional facts about sweet corn and encouraged residents to attend: “Don’t forget, the celebration will be hosted on August 1st in Savanna: see you there!”
The Sweet Corn Day Celebration will take place from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Leader Tony McCombie’s District Office located at 9317B IL Rt 84, Savanna.
McCombie was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 89th House District in 2023, succeeding Andrew Chesney, according to repmccombie.com.
