Memorial Day is more than a long weekend, it’s a day of remembrance for those who gave their lives in service to the United States, according to a May 25 statement. The day is intended for honoring the sacrifice that has contributed to the freedoms Americans enjoy. Observances include respect, reflection, and gratitude toward fallen military personnel.
Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began in the years following the Civil War and was established as an official federal holiday in 1971. Many people observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Formal national ceremonies feature wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery and at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., is also broadcast nationally.
A National Moment of Remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time, when all Americans are asked to pause for one minute of unity and remembrance. On this day, American flags are traditionally flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon before being raised to full staff for the remainder of the day.
Schmidt, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 114th House District, replacing previous state representative LaToya Greenwood, according to Illinois General Assembly.
The holiday continues each year with ceremonies and traditions aimed at remembering those who have died while serving in America’s armed forces.
