The significance of Memorial Day was highlighted on May 25 as citizens were encouraged to remember and honor all men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States. The message called for everyone to take a moment during the holiday to reflect on the contributions of fallen military heroes.

“May we never forget the reason for the Memorial Day holiday — to honor all the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the freedom we have today,” said organizers. “We may not know them all, but we owe them all. Please take a moment today to remember our fallen military heroes.”

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, began in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades.

A National Moment of Remembrance is observed at 3:00 p.m. local time, when Americans are asked to pause for one minute in unity and remembrance. Additionally, tradition calls for American flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon before being raised back up.

Coffey, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 95th House District, replacing previous state representative Tim Butler.
