Michelle Schaefer has been recognized with the ICARE Award for Excellence by Blessing Health System, according to an April 14 announcement. Schaefer, a medical assistant in Radiation Oncology, has served patients and colleagues for more than thirty years.
The award highlights the importance of dedication and compassion in patient care. As the first point of contact for many cancer patients, Schaefer is noted for her considerate and respectful approach during what can be a challenging time.
Schaefer’s coworkers describe her as “a wealth of knowledge” who provides guidance on cancer care policies, veteran authorizations, and insurance requirements. Her work often leads to financial relief for patients, helping them focus on their recovery. She also coordinates appointments to minimize hospital visits for those undergoing treatment.
Her nomination highlighted that many request her assistance because “they know Michelle will get done what is needed in a timely fashion.” In addition to her clinical duties, Schaefer contributes to projects such as maintaining the patient garden near the Medical Oncology department—a space intended to bring comfort to patients and families.
Blessing Health System congratulated Schaefer on receiving the award and thanked her “for consistently setting a standard of care that truly embodies what it means to be exceptional.” The ICARE Award is given based on nominations from employees who demonstrate one of Blessing’s core values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect or Excellence.
