The Millikin Big Blue women’s softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan on April 16 in Bloomington, Illinois. These defeats mark the team’s first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) losses of the season, with final scores of 0-5 and 1-10.
The outcome is significant as it ends Millikin’s unbeaten run in conference play. The results may impact their standings within the CCIW as they approach upcoming matchups.
In the first game, Illinois Wesleyan took control early, scoring twice on a home run by Casey Wissmiller in the opening inning and adding two more runs before its conclusion. The Titans extended their lead with another run in the fifth inning. Millikin managed only two hits during this game, one each from Charley Condill and Summer Wynn.
Game two saw Illinois Wesleyan again establish an early advantage by scoring five runs in the first inning and three more in the second. Millikin scored its only run when Summer Wynn hit a double to center field that brought Abby Willis home during the third inning. However, additional runs from Illinois Wesleyan in both the third and fourth innings ended the contest after five innings due to mercy rules. Bella Palermo, Wynn, and Haley Willan each recorded a hit for Millikin during this matchup.
Looking ahead, Millikin will try to recover from these losses when they host Carthage at Workman Family Softball Field on Sunday, April 19. The first game is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
