The Millikin men’s and women’s track and field teams began competition at the CCIW Outdoor Championships on May 1, recording several notable results including all-conference finishes and new marks on the program’s all-time top-10 list.
The opening day featured a strong showing in the men’s decathlon, where Matthew Schumacher placed second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.38 seconds. Jack Pearce finished close behind in third place at 11.44 seconds, later winning the high jump by clearing 1.84 meters and achieving a long jump mark of 6.22 meters. The decathlon is set to continue into the second day of competition.
In women’s combined events, Audrey Remole led Millikin in the heptathlon by winning the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters, while Taylor Beiler tied for second at 1.52 meters. The heptathlon will also resume on day two.
Several athletes achieved all-conference honors in field events: Alexa Weter cleared 3.51 meters in pole vault, followed by Hailey Newill at 3.36 meters; Hunter Danberry threw for an all-conference mark of 50.07 meters in men’s hammer throw; Schumacher added another all-conference finish with a javelin throw of 46.74 meters.
In distance running, Teyla Wendt posted a time of 42:23.63 in the women’s 10,000 meters to rank seventh on Millikin’s all-time list, while Aiden Pacunas led Millikin men with a time of 32:41.43—good for fourth-best ever at Millikin—in that event; William Turvey (32:56.77) ranked ninth and Talan Thrasher (33:00.65) tenth.
There was additional movement among program records as Weter’s pole vault matched first place historically for Millikin women; Newill’s result ranks fourth and Kelsie Fuoss’ clearance places fifth all-time for pole vaults at Millikin; Danberry’s hammer throw now stands as third best ever recorded by an athlete from Millikin.
Competition will continue into day two as athletes seek further honors.
