The Missouri Valley Conference announced on May 22 that all Friday baseball tournament games have been canceled, with play rescheduled for Saturday, weather permitting. Southern Illinois is set to face No. 2 Indiana State in an elimination game at the originally scheduled time of 3 p.m., now taking place on Saturday, May 23, at Johnny Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.
This matchup is critical for Southern Illinois; a loss would result in elimination from championship contention. If Southern Illinois wins against Indiana State, it will advance to play the loser of the No. 1 UIC versus No. 3 Murray State game at 7 p.m., competing for a spot in Sunday’s championship.
The Southern Illinois Salukis baseball program has a history of success and community engagement through its role in university athletics and has recorded five College World Series appearances under notable leadership such as Richard ‘Itchy’ Jones, who led the team to three College World Series berths and had his uniform number retired by the program according to the official website. The team’s home facility, Itchy Jones Stadium, features artificial turf and a state-of-the-art video board.
Currently, approximately 39 student-athletes are part of the Salukis roster according to the official website.
