NFIB Illinois has expressed its opposition to House Bill 2982, which proposes changes to the minimum wage law by removing the tip credit. The organization submitted written comments to the Illinois House Executive Committee detailing their concerns.

Noah Finley, NFIB Illinois State Director, stated, “Inflation has hit Illinois small businesses hard. The last thing Main Street businesses need is another cost hike. Illinois lawmakers should support small businesses, especially family-run restaurants, and vote ‘NO’ on HB 2982.”

The removal of the tip credit is expected to lead to increased labor costs for small and family-owned restaurants and similar businesses. It could also result in higher dining-out expenses, pushing more consumers towards carry-out and delivery services while potentially excluding lower-income customers from dining out.

Additionally, NFIB warns that this legislative change might decrease employment opportunities within the full-service restaurant sector.
