Northwestern University announced on March 6 a series of events scheduled for the week of April 22 to 28, inviting all members of the community to participate in a range of activities from concerts and lectures to sports and environmental initiatives.
The upcoming week features opportunities for attendees to engage with topics in science, music, culture, and sustainability. The university encourages broad participation in these events, which are open to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Highlights include a performance by the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall on Thursday evening. The program will feature Arnold Bax’s “Dance in the Sunlight,” Clarice Assad’s Violin Concerto with violinist Desirée Ruhstrat, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major.
Environmental stewardship is also on the agenda with Arbor Day tree planting sessions hosted by Facilities Planning & Sustainability alongside the Northwestern Grounds Crew. These will take place Friday morning outside University Hall.
On Friday afternoon, Sean Carroll from Johns Hopkins University will deliver this year’s public Heilborn Lecture at Ryan Auditorium. Carroll is expected to discuss quantum mechanics and its ongoing mysteries: “The theory of quantum mechanics was one of the great intellectual achievements of the last century, but most physicists would agree that we still don’t truly understand what it means.” He will explore why many physicists believe that reality may be constantly branching into different versions due to quantum measurements.
Additional events include Northwestern’s fifth annual Spring Pow Wow hosted by the Native American and Indigenous Student Alliance on Saturday at Welsh-Ryan Arena; a conversation about violence, politics, and journalism in Mexico featuring faculty from Northwestern and other institutions; as well as a Critical Conversation in Humanities led by Joy Connolly from ACLS and Marwan Kraidy from Northwestern Qatar on Monday afternoon.
Rounding out the week is a home baseball game against Milwaukee at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park on Tuesday afternoon. Admission is free for all attendees.
