The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has announced that Oak Ridge Campground at Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area will reopen on June 20. This follows the completion of an $8.45 million infrastructure improvement project, conducted in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Key features of the project included replacing “Thunder Bridge” with a new three-span bridge to enhance safety and accessibility to the campground. Additional upgrades involved installing a precast box culvert, resurfacing park roads, improving parking lots, replacing culverts, adding new lighting, updating park signage, and installing guardrails.

These improvements are seen as a major investment in the park’s future. The enhancements aim to improve safety and comfort for visitors, ensuring Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area continues to be an inviting destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Stephen A. Forbes is known for offering activities such as camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing. Visitors are now able to make reservations for campsites and day-use areas at least three days before their visit by contacting the park directly or visiting its reservation page online.

The IDNR is celebrating its centennial year throughout 2025. Established on July 1, 1925, originally as the Illinois Department of Conservation, it manages around 400 sites across Illinois including state parks and historic sites. Its responsibilities also cover wildlife management, forestry, Lake Michigan water allocation, conservation police duties, and more.
