Oakton College was recognized on March 19 with a Community Enhancement Award from the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce and Industry for its new Learning Commons at the Des Plaines campus. The award was presented during Mayor Andrew Goczkowski’s Annual Address to Business, which took place at Oakton’s campus and was attended by more than 100 business and community leaders.

The recognition highlights Oakton’s efforts to create spaces that support student learning and collaboration. The Learning Commons, which opened in January 2026, brings together library services, tutoring, first-generation student support, technology assistance, and access to college archives in one location. These resources are intended to make it easier for students to find help and opportunities on campus.

Joianne L. Smith, Ph.D., president of Oakton College, said: “The Learning Commons represents Oakton’s commitment to creating inclusive, welcoming spaces where students can access the resources they need to succeed. We are honored that the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce and Industry recognizes how this space supports student success and strengthens our community while advancing Oakton’s vision of building just and thriving communities.”

After the mayor’s address, attendees toured the new facility. The Learning Commons includes focus rooms, huddle rooms, pop-in pods, a library classroom, prayer and meditation rooms, sensory spaces as well as general study areas designed for both individual work and group collaboration.

A similar facility opened at Oakton’s Ray Hartstein Campus in Skokie in 2024. Both projects are part of a $63 million Master Plan Update approved by the Board of Trustees in 2022 with goals to modernize campus spaces and expand services centered on students.

Oakton officials say these developments aim not only to benefit students but also support local businesses by strengthening ties within Des Plaines and surrounding communities.
