Summer activities are underway in Chicago, with a range of outdoor events scheduled throughout the city this June. The list includes opportunities such as a Juneteenth 5K in Garfield Park, drag performances at First Ascent Avondale, community bike rides, lakeside yoga classes, and birdwatching meetups.

According to an announcement on June 3, residents can participate in more than 20 organized outdoor gatherings this month. Highlights include the Pilsen Canalport Cleanup and Bike Brigade on June 6, which departs from South Canalport Avenue and offers participants a chance to help clean up one of the neighborhood’s most littered areas before gathering for lunch at Skylark. Also on June 6 is the Bridgeport Trash Bash at Base Community Cafe, where volunteers can join land or kayak-based cleanup efforts supported by local organizations aiming to remove significant amounts of trash over the summer.

Other notable events include a Camping 101 Workshop hosted by Switchback Chicago at the Chicago Tool Library on West Carroll Avenue; the unveiling of “Holding Space,” a new public art installation along Major Taylor Trail; and several family-friendly activities like Wild Wednesdays at Garfield Park Conservatory & Gardens.

The schedule also features fitness and recreation opportunities such as group yoga sessions near Diversey Harbor every Saturday through August and organized runs like the Peace Runners Juneteenth Wellness 5K. Cyclists can take part in larger rides including Ride Illinois’ Grand Illinois Bike Tour from June 7-12 or join themed community rides like Black JoyRide Juneteenth Bike Ride beginning at Grant Park.

Events continue later in the month with celebrations including Summer Nature Fest at Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum on June 12, Red Bull Spin Off Chicago’s bicycle obstacle race on June 13 at 12th Street Beach, as well as gatherings focused on environmental awareness like Oak Street Beach Clean Up and Midsommer Black Crowned Night Heron Celebration along The Wild Mile. Additional highlights include social skate meetups with Chicago Lakeside Skate Collective and special canoe trips commemorating Juneteenth along the African American Heritage Water Trail.

Organizers encourage attendees to register online for select events or check individual listings for details regarding participation requirements.
