Park Forest Police officers will take part in the annual “Cop on a Rooftop” fundraiser on May 15 at Dunkin’, located at 431 W. 14th St., Chicago Heights.

The event, which runs from 5 a.m. to noon, supports Special Olympics Illinois through the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run and aims to raise funds for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Officers will be present both on the rooftop and at ground level to collect donations from residents and commuters throughout the morning.

Police Chief Brian Rzyski said the department is eager to continue its involvement with this initiative. “Events like ‘Cop on a Rooftop’ give our officers an opportunity to connect with residents while supporting an organization that provides life-changing opportunities for so many individuals,” Rzyski said.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois marks its 40th anniversary this year. Since it began in 2003, “Cop on a Rooftop” has raised more than $11.1 million statewide, making it one of Special Olympics Illinois’ largest fundraising efforts. Last year, Park Forest Police Department collected about $3,000 during this event; combined with other activities such as the Polar Plunge and additional donations through LETR, their total fundraising exceeded $10,000 in 2025.

Rzyski said that participating in events like these is part of a broader commitment by police officers to engage with community members beyond law enforcement duties. “Our officers strive to be involved in as much as possible,” he said. “Whether it’s fundraising for Special Olympics Illinois, participating in the Torch Run, or attending local events, we want to be present and engaged.”

According to the official website, Village of Park Forest promotes community health and engagement via dedicated commissions and programs; has received accolades for sustainability efforts; aims to bolster economic conditions through collaboration; operates under a council-manager government featuring a mayor and six trustees; shows leadership by supporting climate protection agreements; and offers educational opportunities through its Civic Leadership Academy.

Residents who visit Dunkin’ during the event are encouraged to donate any amount they wish. Donors will receive coupons for free donuts or coffee depending on their contribution level while supplies last.
