Pekin student Elizabeth Austin is leading the Illinois State Colors Project, a statewide initiative that brings together K-12 students from across Illinois to help select the state’s official colors, according to an April 24 announcement.
The project highlights civic engagement among young people and aims to involve students in a meaningful decision about state identity. Austin’s efforts have been recognized as setting a positive example for her peers and future generations.
“Elizabeth’s determination and civic engagement set a great example for everyone and gives me great hope for our future generations,” said Illinois State Representative Travis Weaver. The initiative encourages participation from schools throughout the state, allowing students to cast their votes on what they believe should be Illinois’ official colors. More information about the voting process can be found at Students to vote for Illinois’ state color.
Weaver, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 93rd House District, replacing previous state representative Norine Hammond, according to the official record.
As voting progresses, organizers hope that this project will foster greater interest in civic matters among young people while giving them an opportunity to participate directly in shaping state symbols.
