The Property Tax Relief Conference sent an open letter on May 22 to Governor JB Pritzker and members of the General Assembly urging immediate action on property tax relief before the end of the spring legislative session.
The group said that Illinois taxpayers can no longer afford another year without reforms designed to slow property tax growth and improve transparency and accountability in the system. The issue is significant for many residents, as property taxes remain a major financial concern across the state.
In recent weeks, the conference has advocated for several reforms, including greater voter transparency on property tax referendums and ending what it calls “backdoor referendums,” which allow taxes to continue without additional voter approval. Members say these measures are necessary to ensure voters have a clear voice in decisions affecting their taxes.
Members of the conference said they are prepared to work with lawmakers from both parties on reforms that provide meaningful and lasting relief for Illinois taxpayers before adjournment. “Weber, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2019 to represent the state’s 64th House District, replacing previous state representative Barbara Wheeler,” according to the Illinois General Assembly.
As lawmakers approach adjournment, observers will be watching closely for any legislative developments regarding property tax reform.
