The advancement of autonomous technology in agriculture continues as PTx Trimble introduces its OutRun platform, a retrofit kit designed to enable high automation in harvest and tillage operations, according to a June 1 announcement. The company said the pathway to autonomy requires multiple technological advancements including GNSS positioning, steering control, and perception technology.
PTx Trimble reports that the agricultural industry currently operates between partial and conditional automation. The Society of Automotive Engineers categorizes vehicle autonomy into six stages ranging from no automation to full automation. According to the article, “Today, the agriculture industry as a whole falls somewhere between stages two and three, partial automation and conditional automation.”
The OutRun platform is described as a self-contained solution that allows existing tractors—specifically John Deere 8R IVT and Fendt 900 models—to perform tasks autonomously without requiring new machinery purchases. “OutRun allows farming operations to deploy their skilled labor to other critical tasks and enables a more efficient spring and harvest,” the company said.
The system supports remote monitoring through smartphone apps with live feeds, images, and alerts if obstacles are detected. Operators can calibrate boundaries or designate areas such as trees or waterways for avoidance before placing tractors in autonomous mode. “With the ability to set the system and walk away, monitoring and managing tillage operations remotely can be done anywhere in the world through 360-degree live feeds,” according to PTx Trimble.
OutRun is now commercially available in North America, Canada, and Australia. The article emphasizes that while autonomy has advanced significantly since early steering systems were introduced over twenty years ago by companies like PTx Trimble (formerly Trimble Agriculture), its purpose remains supporting farmers rather than replacing them.
AgWeb functions as a subsidiary of Farm Journal offering publications on commodity markets, leadership strategies for farmers, awards programs such as Top Producer Awards in partnership with organizations like the American Soybean Association for conservation honors; it also promotes community advocacy initiatives within agriculture, according to the official website.
