Overnight ramp closures and detours are set to take place this week at the O’Hare Interchange, where the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) meets the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), due to ongoing work related to relocating the O’Hare Interchange Toll Plaza. The construction is being performed by the Illinois Department of Transportation in preparation for a future project aimed at improving I-190 operations and access to O’Hare International Airport.

The closures will begin at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3, affecting ramps connecting southbound I-294 and eastbound I-90 to westbound I-190. Detours will direct southbound I-294 traffic onto westbound Irving Park Road and northbound Mannheim Road before reaching westbound I-190. Eastbound I-90 drivers will be rerouted to southbound I-294 and follow the same detour route. Ramps are scheduled to reopen by 4 a.m. on Wednesday, February 4. This schedule will repeat on Wednesday night.

Electronic message signs and other construction signage will alert drivers about closures and detours. Updated information can be found in the Daily Construction Alert section of the Illinois Tollway website (https://www.illinoistollway.com/projects). All planned work is subject to weather conditions.

According to officials, “Two nights of closures and detours will be needed to install a monotube and to perform electrical work as part of ongoing toll plaza construction by the Illinois Department of Transportation on its I-190 Project.”

Construction in this area is being completed in stages with two lanes open for traffic but reduced shoulder space throughout 2026 as work continues.

The larger improvement plan includes relocating the existing toll plaza, constructing a new control building, reconstructing ramps, upgrading lighting, and installing new roadway signage.

Motorists are reminded that speed limits are enforced around-the-clock in all construction zones. Drivers should stay alert for changing traffic patterns and use caution near workers. The “Move Over Law” requires motorists either change lanes or slow down when passing vehicles with hazard lights activated.

As stated in the release: “Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones or failure to comply with the Move Over Law.” Penalties start at $250 for speeding in a work zone; more severe violations can result in higher fines or jail time.
