Assistant Minority Leader and State Representative Brad Stephens said on June 1 that the recently passed $55.9 billion Illinois state budget is not in the best interest of taxpayers. The budget was approved in the Illinois House along party lines.
Stephens issued a statement following the vote: “Illinois families are looking for affordability, stability, and opportunity. They need a budget that helps keep costs down, strengthens local businesses, and supports economic growth. Instead, this proposal relies on tax increases, gimmicks, and fund sweeps; it is out of touch with what our state truly needs.”
The statement reflects ongoing concerns among some lawmakers about how the new spending plan will impact residents and businesses across Illinois.
Stephens has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State House since 2019, representing the state’s 20th House District after replacing former representative Michael P. McAuliffe, according to the Illinois General Assembly.
The passage of this budget continues to draw debate over fiscal priorities and approaches to economic development within the state.
