Illinois State Representative Jason Bunting released a news update on May 15 outlining the approaching budget deadline, recent ceremonies honoring first responders, and details about an upcoming Community Health Fair scheduled for June 10.
The update comes as the General Assembly prepares to adjourn its spring session by May 31, after which a higher vote threshold will be required for most legislation. The state’s new fiscal year begins July 1. Many legislative issues remain unresolved, including the state budget proposal of more than $56 billion, which would be Illinois’ largest ever. Debate continues among lawmakers over potential tax increases and spending priorities.
Bunting said he is focused on ensuring that the budget is balanced without accounting gimmicks or tax increases and funds key priorities such as education, public safety, transportation, rural hospitals, and services for farmers. He also said it should avoid what he described as “wasteful spending like the millions in pork projects in only Democrat-held districts which were included in last year’s budget.”
In his statement, Bunting highlighted recent memorial ceremonies at the Capitol honoring fallen police officers and firefighters: “Every day, firefighters and law enforcement officers work to protect our communities, uphold public safety, and respond in moments when others need help most.” He added: “We proudly support our brave police officers and firefighters and recognize the sacrifices they and their families make in service to others. Thank you to all first responders for your hard work, professionalism, and dedication to keeping our communities safe.”
Bunting invited residents to attend a free Community Health Fair co-hosted with Senator Chris Balkema on June 10 at Watseka School Unit 9 Office from 9 a.m. until noon. The event aims to connect local residents with resources from various service agencies.
According to Bunting’s office update—supported by information that he was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 106th House District in 2023—he replaced former state representative Thomas Bennett according to his office.
