Illinois State Representative Jason Bunting released an update on April 17 covering legislative activity, a proposal to suspend the state sales tax on gasoline, and community engagement efforts.
Bunting said high gas prices are impacting residents across Illinois, especially in rural areas. He announced his support as a co-sponsor of House Bill 5738, which would temporarily suspend the state sales tax on gasoline from July through December. “Suspending this tax is a small step, but at least it is something that we can, and should, do to help,” Bunting said.
The representative also addressed concerns about transparency in the legislative process during a busy week at the Capitol. He described how nearly 500 bills were considered as deadlines approached for House bills to move to the Senate. Bunting raised issues with practices such as last-minute amendments and use of shell bills: “The ‘shell bill process’ as it is known is a useful tool in the toolbox for time-sensitive legislation. But like anything else, it should be used responsibly.” He recounted an incident where debate was cut short during consideration of a controversial wetlands bill before enough members arrived for passage.
Bunting highlighted local student Scarlett Siebert’s participation as Page for a Day in the House chamber. Siebert attends Watseka Junior High and is active in school clubs and community service projects.
As planting season begins across Illinois, Bunting reminded farmers and drivers alike about safety precautions: “To our farmers: thank you for the long hours and dedication you put in to feed our communities… To drivers: be alert on rural roads… A few extra minutes can save a life.” He urged families to discuss farm safety with children and encouraged everyone to check emergency plans during this busy season.
According to information about his background, Bunting was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 106th District in 2023, succeeding Thomas Bennett.
