State Representative Charlie Meier (R-Okawville) announced on May 11 the passage of House Resolution 865, which recognizes Roger Stieg’s induction into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class of 2026.
The resolution highlights Stieg’s achievements as a basketball player, teacher, and coach. “Roger Stieg is a Southern Illinois basketball legend,” said Rep. Charlie Meier. “Our community is proud of all he has contributed, as a player, teacher and coach. I am pleased to recognize him with an official Illinois House Resolution, ensuring his legacy is preserved in Illinois history.”
Stieg played for Nashville High School from 1975 to 1979 and led the team to three conference titles, three regional titles, two sectional titles, and a Class A State Championship. He was Nashville High School’s scoring leader for 27 years with a total of 1,616 points.
Following high school, Stieg played at Ole Miss where he helped lead the Rebels to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1981 and maintained a career field goal percentage that still ranks fourth in school history. After graduating with a business degree and teaching certification in 1984, he taught mathematics at Centralia High School for over three decades while coaching both boys’ and girls’ basketball teams until his retirement in 2018.
The official resolution states: “WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Roger Stieg on being recognized at the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Annual Awards in 2026; … RESOLVED … that we congratulate Roger Stieg on being recognized at the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Annual Awards in 2026, and we thank him for his dedication to athletics; … That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Roger Stieg as a symbol of our esteem and respect.”
Meier was elected as Republican representative for the state’s 109th House District in 2023 after replacing David Reis according to Ballotpedia.
