State Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer said on May 21 that House Bill 4471 acts as a de facto ban on Glock pistols in Illinois and called for more focus on crime control instead of gun control measures.
The bill has advanced to the House floor after passing a committee vote of 9-5-0 along party lines. Supporters say it aims to address concerns over certain firearms, while opponents like Davidsmeyer argue it will not address underlying issues with gun violence.
“Banning Glocks will do nothing to stop gun crime,” Rep. Davidsmeyer said. “Switches are already illegal and violent criminals don’t follow our existing gun laws. We need crime control, not gun control.”
Davidsmeyer also questioned the sponsor of the bill during committee debate about firearm ownership, stating: “During committee debate, I asked the Democrat sponsor of the Glock ban if he owned a firearm, which he did not. I am tired of people who choose not to exercise their Second Amendment rights attempting to take away my constitutional rights as a law-abiding gun owner.”
Davidsmeyer voted against House Bill 4471 as it moved forward for consideration before the scheduled end of session on May 31.
Davidsmeyer was elected in 2012 to represent Illinois’ 100th House District and succeeded former state representative Jim Watson, according to the Illinois State House.
