House Bill 910, known as the Megaproject Bill, passed the Illinois House with a bipartisan vote of 78-32, Rep. Brad Fritts announced on Apr. 23.
The bill is designed to increase economic development and investment across Illinois while ensuring local control over major projects. This legislation is significant because it establishes a framework for large-scale economic opportunities throughout the state.
“I voted in favor of the megaproject bill because it protects local control, increases economic development, and drives investment across Illinois,” said Rep. Brad Fritts. “This bill does more than just keep the conversations going with the Chicago Bears – it creates a framework for major economic development opportunities across Illinois.”
Fritts also highlighted provisions in the bill that require local review boards and regular public impact reports to maintain accountability and transparency. “I will always vote in favor of increased local control because I believe our local elected officials know our communities best and deserve a seat at the table. This bill will require the creation of local review boards and periodic public impact reports, ensuring long-term accountability and transparency,” he said.
He clarified that House Bill 910 is not a subsidy but rather “a structured agreement designed to attract large-scale investment while putting safeguards in place for taxpayers.” According to information about his background, Fritts was elected as a Republican representative to serve Illinois’s 74th House District in 2023, replacing Dan Swanson.
Fritts concluded by expressing optimism about future discussions: “I look forward to continued bipartisan discussions on this bill as it moves through the legislative process.”
The passage of this legislation may affect how future megaprojects are handled statewide by emphasizing both economic growth and community involvement.
