State Representative Jeff Keicher said on June 1 that the extension of several Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Districts in Illinois has led to abuse, exploiting taxpayers and diverting funds away from schools. Speaking against legislation that would extend these districts, Keicher addressed the impact he believes such policies have had on local education funding.
“[He] called out the abuse of TIF districts that have exploited taxpayers and stripped funding that should go to our schools,” according to a statement released by his office.
Keicher, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2018 to represent the state’s 70th House District, replacing previous state representative Robert W. Pritchard, according to Rep. Jeff Keicher’s office.
TIF districts are used by municipalities as a tool for economic development and infrastructure improvement. Critics argue that prolonged or mismanaged TIF designations can divert tax revenue from public services such as schools.
The debate over extending TIF districts continues among lawmakers who weigh their benefits for local development against concerns about their effect on public education funding.
