Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt announced on Apr. 20 that his bill to expand access to military license plates passed the House with bipartisan support and will move to the Senate for further consideration. House Bill 4385 aims to make it easier for veterans and service members who already have military plates to obtain an identical set for a second vehicle.
The legislation is intended as a gesture of appreciation for those who have served in the armed forces, while also reducing administrative barriers. “This bill allows veterans and service members who already have military plates to obtain an identical set for a second vehicle without jumping to unnecessary hoops. It is a simple way to show our appreciation and make things a little easier for those who have sacrificed for our country,” Schmidt said.
In addition, Schmidt reported that his transparency-focused legislation, House Bill 2137, has also passed the House. The bill would require all government websites in Illinois to provide information allowing public access to financial and audit reports, including links to the Comptroller’s website.
Schmidt invited constituents from his district—which includes part of St. Clair County—to participate in an affordability survey regarding state policies impacting residents’ finances. He also promoted upcoming events such as a Property Tax Appeal Seminar presented by St. Clair County Board Member Ed Cockrell, where legislative staff will be available for questions about state issues.
Schmidt was elected as a Republican representative in 2023, succeeding LaToya Greenwood in representing Illinois’ 114th District according to Ballotpedia.
Looking ahead, Schmidt encouraged families living in the district to take advantage of free Museum Cards available through his office that provide access for small groups at select museums and institutions.
