The Illinois General Assembly passed a $55.9 billion state budget, the largest in the state’s history, on June 1, with State Representative Kevin Schmidt voting against the package and saying it fails to address rising living costs for residents.
Schmidt said, “People in my district are begging for relief from Illinois’ sky-high taxes. This budget is full of higher taxes, broken promises, pork projects in Democratic districts, and no solutions to lower the cost of living. My constituents deserve a budget that is fiscally responsible and rooted in reality, and this budget asks them to pay more taxes and get less in return.”
The FY27 budget includes an additional $800 million in new taxes. Schmidt also said he will continue donating his legislative pay raise to local food pantries as part of efforts to fight food insecurity in the Metro East area—a practice he has maintained for several years.
Schmidt represents the 114th District, which covers a portion of St. Clair County. For further information about his position or legislative work, constituents are encouraged to contact his office at (618)-215-1050.
Schmidt, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 114th House District after replacing previous state representative LaToya Greenwood, according to Rep. Schmidt’s office.
