State Representative Mike Coffey marked the grand opening of Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe in Springfield on April 29. The event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which Coffey said represents a significant milestone for the 95th District and the State of Illinois.
The opening is seen as important because it introduces new athletic and entertainment facilities to the community, aiming to make Springfield a destination for families from across the country. The sports park features what is described as the largest air-supported sports dome in the world, along with various outdoor facilities designed for athletes. It is expected to serve as a year-round center for athletics, entertainment, and community activities.
“Today is not just a ribbon cutting, it’s a statement reflecting the commitment from community leaders and stakeholders working together to shape the city of Springfield into a destination to visit for families across the country,” Coffey said during his remarks at the ceremony.
Coffey was elected in 2023 as state representative for Illinois’ 95th House District, replacing Tim Butler according to public records. His district includes parts of Sangamon County—such as portions of Springfield—and also covers areas within Chatham, Rochester, Macon County, and Christian County.
Looking ahead, officials expect Scheels Sports Park will become an important hub that brings people together throughout all seasons. Community members are encouraged to learn more about Scheels Sports Park by visiting its website.
