State Representative Mike Coffey voted in favor of House Bill 910, known as the “Mega Project” bill, according to an April 24 announcement. Coffey said he supported the legislation because it aims to help revitalize downtown Springfield and support local economic growth.
The bill is seen as significant for Springfield’s future development. Supporters believe it will encourage investment, create jobs, and expand the city’s tax base. Coffey said, “I didn’t vote for the Chicago Bears. I voted for Springfield.” He also said, “This is a huge win for downtown Springfield, which will help attract major economic development opportunities for our capital city. This legislation will attract investment, create jobs, and grow our local economy.”
Coffey said that decisions about economic opportunities should be made at the local level and that this bill would give more power to local governments in making such choices.
Coffey was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 95th House District in 2023 after replacing former state representative Tim Butler according to available information.
The Mega Project bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
