State Representative Kevin Schmidt announced on May 19 that he has donated his legislative pay raise to the food pantry at Zion United Church of Christ in New Baden. Schmidt, who said he voted against the pay increase, pledged to give the additional funds each month to local organizations across his district.

Schmidt said this effort is intended to help families in need and support community groups. “I’m proud to support local food pantries across my district and help families in need,” said Rep. Schmidt. “These donations not only support a great cause, but they also give me the opportunity to meet new constituents and learn more about the communities I represent.”

This month’s donation included essential items such as toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, cereal, pancake mix, syrup, and canned chicken for distribution through the church’s pantry program. Members of Zion United Church of Christ provide monthly food boxes on the first Friday for families needing extra groceries.

The church also operates a clothing pantry every Tuesday with hours from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., offering clothing and small household goods for anyone in need.

Schmidt was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 114th House District in 2023 after replacing former state representative LaToya Greenwood, according to Rep. Schmidt’s office.

Schmidt represents part of St. Clair County and encourages residents seeking assistance or more information about area food pantries to visit his website or contact his office.
