Illinois State Representative Dan Ugaste said on Apr. 21 that Speaker Welch and House Democrats have introduced a last-minute amendment that would change the Illinois Constitution and affect the state’s legislative maps. Ugaste said, “Speaker Welch and the House Democrats have filed a last-minute amendment that would fundamentally alter the Illinois Constitution and further rig our already gerrymandered legislative maps. Our maps are already the worst in the nation in terms of fairness, leaving millions of voters without a voice. This amendment must be stopped.”
The issue is significant because it concerns how electoral districts are drawn in Illinois, which can impact voter representation across the state.
Ugaste’s comments reflect ongoing debates about redistricting and concerns over fairness in political map drawing. He argued that current practices already leave many voters without adequate representation.
Ugaste, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2019 to represent the state’s 65th House District, replacing previous state representative Steven Andersson according to Ballotpedia.
The discussion over legislative mapping continues as lawmakers consider potential changes to constitutional provisions regarding district boundaries.
