Illinois State Representative Travis Weaver announced on Apr. 21 that K-12 students across the state are invited to participate in a survey to help choose official state colors. The deadline for the survey has been extended to May 1, giving more students an opportunity to share their preferences.
The initiative aims to involve young people in the legislative process by allowing them a direct role in selecting symbols that represent Illinois. Weaver said the results of the survey will guide a bill he plans to file in the General Assembly, ensuring it reflects “the will of the students.” Students can access and complete the survey through the Illinois State Colors Project link provided by his office.
Weaver, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 and represents the state’s 93rd House District, replacing previous state representative Norine Hammond, according to Ballotpedia.
The project is part of broader efforts by lawmakers like Weaver to engage youth and foster civic participation from an early age. By involving students directly in decisions about state symbols, officials hope to encourage ongoing interest and involvement in government affairs.
Looking ahead, Weaver said he intends for student input gathered through this process to shape upcoming legislation regarding official state colors.
