State Representative Tom Weber called on May 15 for action to provide relief from what he described as oppressive property taxes during remarks on the House Floor. Weber referenced both historical context and the experience of a young family in his district, saying their property taxes have grown to nearly equal their monthly mortgage.
Weber said that the current level of property taxation is “un-American and killing the American Dream for young families trying to make ends meet.” He urged the General Assembly to take serious action on this issue.
House Republicans have proposed several bills aimed at overhauling Illinois’ property tax system. The package includes HB 9, sponsored by Ugaste, which would create the Fixed Pension Property Tax Relief Plan and is estimated to provide $3.5 billion in state property tax relief for 2026 alone; HB 5611 and HB 5612, sponsored by Weaver, which would reinvest funds from paid bonds into tax relief; HB 2543 by Sosnowski, which would require taxing bodies to seek voter approval; HB 1024 by Cabello, mandating sunsets for tax referenda and increasing transparency; and HB 5550 by Fritts, which increases notice requirements for tax increases.
Weber was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 64th House District in 2019, succeeding Barbara Wheeler, according to Ballotpedia.
The legislative proposals are intended to address concerns about affordability and transparency within Illinois’ property tax system. Lawmakers are expected to continue debating these measures as part of ongoing efforts at reform.
