Illinois State Representative Dan Swanson released a Capitol News Update on May 4, outlining recent legislative activity and community events. Swanson reported that the Illinois House has passed House Bill 910, known as the ‘Megaprojects bill,’ which includes incentives for the Chicago Bears to build a new stadium in Arlington Heights. He said he voted against the bill because it does not provide broad tax relief for all Illinois residents.
Swanson explained that efforts to keep the Bears in Illinois have been ongoing, especially after Indiana enacted its own law earlier this year to attract the team. The current bill is not final and will move to the Senate for further changes. “I would like to see Illinois reach an agreement with the Bears that would keep the team in the state. But such an agreement must be fair to all Illinois taxpayers,” Swanson said.
In addition to legislative updates, Swanson discussed findings from a recent investigation by the Office of Inspector General into fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program loans obtained by some state employees during COVID-19 shutdowns. He noted that many employees involved were terminated or resigned, and some faced prosecution.
Swanson also highlighted his attendance at this weekend’s Special Olympics competition at Galesburg High School, thanking volunteers and staff who made it possible. He expressed appreciation for Smithfield’s food contributions and shared his enjoyment of watching athletes compete.
The update included details about a successful Veterans and Senior Fair held in Galesburg, which drew over 300 participants. Free haircuts were provided to more than 20 veterans, health screenings were offered by Lions Club Vision and Hearing van, and donations filled Knox County Veterans Assistance Commission’s pantry.
Swanson was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 71st District in 2023, succeeding Donald L. Moffitt according to Ballotpedia.
He concluded his message by mentioning other news items such as discussions around tax amendments, power plant operations in Illinois, public safety concerns regarding parole violations, severe weather trends across the state, and developments affecting credit card fee laws.
