Representative Paul Jacobs congratulates Herrin Junior High girls basketball team for state championship

State Representative Paul Jacobs passed House Resolution 786 on May 8 to recognize the Herrin Junior High School girls basketball team, known as the Lady Tigers, for winning the 2026 Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Class L State Championship and completing an undefeated season with a record of 25-0.

The recognition highlights the achievements of the Lady Tigers during the 2025-2026 season. The team consists of eighth graders Rylin Cravens, Blakly Faulkenberry, Brynlee Fortner, Emma Patalano, and Amayah Simelton; seventh graders Elle Hall, Lexi Henard, Bryleigh Holland, Ainsley Rich, and Olivia Wade; and sixth graders Gracie Menesse, Betty More-Coleman, and Caterina Zaranti.

“This is a great group of girls and thank you to Coach Matt Zarantti for your leadership and commitment to an excellent program at Herrin Junior High School,” said Representative Jacobs. “In addition to the hard work and talent of the athletes, we also want to thank Assistant Coaches Layla Wade and Makayla Starkweather, and team Managers Molly Duppong and Gracelyn Evans.”

Jacobs was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 118th House District in 2023 after replacing previous state representative Patrick Windhorst,according to the American Financial Services Association.

The resolution commends not only the athletes but also coaches Matt Zarantti, Layla Wade, Makayla Starkweather as well as managers Molly Duppong and Gracelyn Evans for their contributions throughout this successful season.
