State Representatives C.D. Davidsmeyer and Jeff Keicher said on May 22 that Democrats in control of the Illinois General Assembly have a spending problem rather than a revenue problem. The comments came during a news conference held before lawmakers left Springfield for an abbreviated holiday weekend.
Davidsmeyer said Governor JB Pritzker’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2027 is approximately $1 billion higher than the current year’s budget, which ends June 30. He also said state spending has increased by forty percent since Pritzker took office after his election in 2018. “The state of Illinois has increased spending by $16 billion since then,” Davidsmeyer said. “He raised taxes and fees 57 times, and he wants to take even more money out of the pockets of hardworking Illinoisans this year.”
Davidsmeyer criticized Democratic leaders’ approach to affordability, saying their strategy amounts to: “Tax. Spend. Repeat.”
Lawmakers are scheduled to return on Memorial Day for the final seven-day session before their planned adjournment on May 31.
Davidsmeyer, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2012 to represent the state’s 100th House District, replacing previous state representative Jim Watson, according to Ballotpedia.
