Crest Hill, IL – Robert A. Smolich, known to many as “Bob,” peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, in Crest Hill at the age of 87. A lifelong resident of Crest Hill, he was born in Joliet and was a devoted member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet and a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet. Bob retired from the Teamsters Union Local 179 after 40 years of dedicated service and was a founding member of the Crest Hill Police Department.

Bob found great joy in fishing, often joining his father, brothers, and uncle on fishing trips. He also enjoyed golfing, especially when accompanied by his wife, Virg, relatives, and dear friends. A true “Jack of all trades,” Bob had a knack for home projects and garage tinkering, passing his skills onto his daughters and family. He treasured spending time with his loved ones above all else.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Mary (Nee Spreitzer) Smolich, one sister in infancy, Joann Smolich, and son-in-law, Marshal Gibson.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Virginia (Nee Strahanoski) Smolich, three cherished daughters: Phyllis (Jay) Ringo of Joliet, Mary (late Marshal) Gibson of Algonquin, IL, and Annette (Preston) Gilmer of Delano, MN. He is also survived by eight beloved grandchildren, Samantha, Carly, Michelle Ringo, Erik, Luke, Connor (Justine) Gibson, Dylan (Emma), Cole Gilmer, and two adored great-grandchildren, Hatten and Nash Gilmer. Bob is also survived by his four loving siblings: Richard, James (Lynn), Raymond (Arlene), Charles (Janet) Smolich, and many other cherished family members and friends.

The Smolich family extends their heartfelt thanks to the medical staff, Storypoint in Romeoville, and the Lightways Hospice team for their care and support, with a special thank you to Bob’s niece, Laura. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Lightways Hospice in Robert’s name would be greatly appreciated.

According to Bob’s wishes, cremation rites have been respectfully arranged. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at O’Neil Funeral Home Chapel, Lockport, IL. Family and friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.oneilfuneralhome.com.
