A Rockford man has pleaded guilty in federal court to robbing a U.S. Post Office in the city last year.
According to prosecutors, Anthony Johnson walked about one block from his home to the post office on May 27, 2025. He demanded that a clerk hand over all the money in the cash register and left with approximately $219. Johnson then returned to his residence, crossing through private backyards.
Johnson, age 59, entered a guilty plea on Monday to one count of robbing money from the United States. The charge carries a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for July 8, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., before U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston.
The announcement was made by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Mary T. Johnson, Acting Inspector in Charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The Rockford Police Department assisted with the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Kim is representing the government.
