Southern Illinois University Athletics reported on May 25 that only the track and field team remains in competition after the baseball team’s exit from the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

The Saluki baseball team finished its season with an overall record of 27-32 and a conference record of 14-10. The week began with an 8-4 victory over Evansville, highlighted by Mason Schwalbach’s home run and strong pitching from Andrew Evans. After a loss to top-seeded UIC, Southern Illinois avoided elimination by defeating Evansville again, with Charlie Miller pitching eight innings. The Salukis then upset Indiana State, powered by Kaleb Hall’s ninth-inning grand slam and two scoreless innings from Dylan Petrey out of the bullpen.

In the semifinal round, Southern Illinois beat host Murray State 9-7, advancing to Championship Sunday for the first time since 2022. Meade Johnson earned a save after three shutout innings. However, needing two wins against UIC to secure the title, SIU fell in game one despite Kristian Sprawling’s RBI and another solid start from Evans.

Track and field will send five athletes along with a relay team to compete at NCAA West Regionals in Fayetteville, Arkansas, scheduled from Wednesday, May 27 through Saturday, May 30.

Southern Illinois University Athletics teams participate at the NCAA Division I level and compete in the Missouri Valley Conference using facilities such as Banterra Center and Saluki Stadium; they also maintain a Hall of Fame honoring outstanding contributors. The Salukis nickname derives from an ancient Egyptian dog breed known for speed, grace, and endurance, according to the official website.
