Southern Illinois lost to Indiana State 8-5 on May 1 after a six-run eighth inning turned the tide of the Missouri Valley Conference baseball matchup at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale.
The game was notable for its dramatic shift late, as Southern Illinois led by three runs before Indiana State’s rally. The loss impacts the Salukis’ standing in conference play and highlights the unpredictable nature of college baseball.
Kristian Sprawling started strong for Southern Illinois with a solo home run in the first inning, contributing four hits over the course of the game. Starting pitcher Andrew Evans kept Indiana State’s offense contained through five innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out six batters. Nick Sutherlin’s leadoff triple set up Indiana State’s first run, and Mason Roell later delivered a grand slam that put Indiana State ahead for good.
Jack MacIntosh pitched two scoreless innings before trouble began in the eighth. Walks, a controversial foul-ball call, and an error contributed to loading the bases before Roell’s decisive home run.
