Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt announced on Apr. 17 that his bill aimed at increasing transparency on government websites has passed the House. The legislation, known as House Bill 2137, requires all government websites in Illinois to provide information that allows the public to access financial and audit reports, including a link to the Comptroller’s website.

The passage of this bill is intended to make it easier for residents of Illinois to find important financial information about their government online. By requiring such disclosures, supporters say it will improve accountability and openness in state operations.

“I’m happy to see my bill pass the House that will expand transparency across government websites in Illinois. House Bill 2137 requires all government websites to have information on its site that allows the public to have access to financial/ audit reports, including a link to the Comptroller’s website,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 representing the state’s 114th House District after replacing previous state representative LaToya Greenwood according to Ballotpedia.

Observers expect further discussion as this legislation moves forward through additional steps before becoming law.
