Schneider Electric became the first company to receive UL Solutions’ ECOLOGO certification for an industrial product in April, marking a milestone in sustainability for the industrial electrical distribution sector. The company earned this distinction for its PowerPacT molded case circuit breakers, following a collaboration with UL Solutions.
The announcement reflects growing demand from stakeholders, customers, regulators and investors for trusted, science-based standards to validate environmental performance and prevent greenwashing. As industries move toward electrification and decarbonization, third-party certifications are increasingly important in establishing harmonized benchmarks and supporting responsible material use throughout product lifecycles.
The ECOLOGO certification is based on UL 2711, the Standard for Sustainability of Energy and Industrial Automation Equipment. This standard evaluates products on criteria such as material selection, manufacturing practices, energy performance, durability, circularity strategies and corporate transparency. The comprehensive requirements provide a full lifecycle perspective on environmental impact.
Marta Asack, senior vice president of Power Products at Schneider Electric said: “As sustainability expectations accelerate across the industrial landscape, customers require verifiable, lifecycle based proof that products are designed and manufactured responsibly. By applying the UL 2711 multi attribute standard, we can demonstrate credible environmental performance across material selection, manufacturing practices, circularity strategies, and end of life considerations without compromising safety or reliability. The ECOLOGO certification not only validates the progress we’ve made but also establishes a scalable blueprint for advancing transparency and setting a new benchmark for sustainable innovation across the industrial sector.”
Jeff Smidt, senior vice president of Testing, Inspection and Certification at UL Solutions said: “Schneider Electric’s decision to pursue this achievement highlights how certification by UL Solutions can support companies in meeting market and regulatory expectations while strengthening customer trust.” He added: “Manufacturers are increasingly expected to demonstrate their sustainability commitments, and this collaboration with Schneider Electric has shown the industrial sector what is possible with certifications such as ECOLOGO.”
Schneider’s Environmental Data Program further supports these efforts by providing standardized reporting on metrics like material composition and energy usage through Environmental Data Sheets. This initiative aims to deliver greater transparency in product-level sustainability reporting.
The recognition sets a new industry benchmark by showing that complex industrial equipment can meet rigorous sustainability criteria without sacrificing safety or performance.
