The University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball team defeated No. 19 Oregon, 16-13, in a high-scoring game at Illinois Field on April 19, capped by a three-run walkoff home run from Kyle Schupmann.
The matchup saw both teams combine for 21 runs over the final three innings, with the Illini scoring 12 times during that stretch. Schupmann ended his day going 2-for-5 at the plate with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Michael Farina reached base four times and recorded three hits while scoring twice.
Several other players contributed to the offensive effort: Nick Groves and J.R. Nelson each drove in two runs and had multi-hit games, while AJ Putty also drew three walks and scored three times. On the mound, Sam Mommer earned the win by pitching the last one and two-thirds innings without allowing a run or more than one baserunner.
The Ducks took an early lead before Illinois responded with a four-run fourth inning to move ahead. After Oregon regained control, Illinois exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning as Luke Landrus delivered a key two-run single that put them back on top. Despite Oregon answering with seven runs in the eighth to retake the lead, Illinois tied it up again before Schupmann’s decisive home run in the ninth sealed their victory.
