Illinois State Senator Andrew Chesney announced on Apr. 27 a series of initiatives for residents of the 45th District, including a summer reading program for students and a free community shred event in Machesney Park.
The summer reading challenge is aimed at encouraging students entering first through eighth grade to read eight books before August 15. Chesney said, “Summer is a great time to build strong reading habits, explore new interests, and keep your mind sharp while school is out.” Participants who complete the challenge will receive an official certificate of recognition from the Illinois Senate. Students are encouraged to visit local libraries and track their progress using an online form.
Chesney also invited residents to attend a free Community Shred Event on Saturday, May 16 at Machesney Town Center. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to noon or until the shredding truck reaches capacity. Residents can bring up to two banker boxes of paper documents per vehicle for secure disposal. Electronics will not be accepted at this event.
In addition, Chesney congratulated Gennings Dunker of Lena for being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 96th pick in the NFL Draft. He said Dunker “has already made his mark as a standout athlete and a leader our communities can rally behind,” noting his achievements with Lena-Winslow’s state championship team and his career at the University of Iowa.
Chesney was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 45th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Brian Stewart according to Ballotpedia.
The senator encouraged anyone with questions about these programs or events to contact his office.
