Illinois State Senator Andrew Chesney reported on May 4 that he participated in several community and educational events, as well as called for changes to the state’s SAFE-T Act. Chesney joined students and educators at Ag Day with the Durand FFA, met with East Dubuque eighth-grade students at the Illinois Capitol, visited Meridian Junior High in Stillman Valley, and addressed recent concerns regarding public safety legislation.

Chesney said that events like Ag Day are important because they show how agriculture education prepares students for future success. “It was impressive to see FFA members take the lead in organizing interactive stations and sharing their knowledge with attendees. The level of preparation and pride they showed in their work speaks volumes about the strength of these programs,” Chesney said.

During his visit to Meridian Junior High, Chesney spoke with students about state government. He also met with school officials to discuss district priorities and challenges. “The students were prepared with thoughtful questions, asking about everything from how laws are passed to how the state budget works. It was great to see that level of curiosity and engagement at such a young age,” he said.

Chesney addressed public safety by criticizing Illinois’ SAFE-T Act after a Chicago police officer was killed recently. “I am sick and tired of watching good men and women in blue bleed in the streets because Illinois Democrats put criminals first with their radical SAFE-T Act,” Chesney said. He argued that reforms or repeal are needed: “If we aren’t going to repeal this awful law, then we need to demand real reform… We must protect our residents and back the blue.”

Chesney is a Republican who was elected to represent Illinois’ 45th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Brian Stewart according to official records.

As legislative debates continue over criminal justice policies, Chesney’s comments reflect ongoing concerns among some lawmakers about balancing public safety with legal reforms.
