Illinois State Senator Andrew Chesney said on June 1 that he voted against the recently passed state budget, describing it as a “massive Democrat budget” and criticizing the process by which it was approved. Chesney said, “At 3 a.m., Illinois Democrats patted themselves on the back for ramming through a record-shattering $56 billion spending spree that piles on more than $800 million in new tax hikes.”
Chesney criticized the limited time lawmakers had to review thousands of pages in the budget documents before voting. He said, “After thousands of pages and only a few hours to review it, the result was exactly what we have come to expect: more spending, more taxes, and zero real relief for working families.” He also highlighted concerns about high property taxes, gas taxes, sales taxes, and energy costs faced by Illinois residents.
Chesney said state government spending has increased by over 40 percent during Democratic control and argued this has not translated into economic benefits for residents. He said Illinois has “the worst unemployment rate in the Midwest” and an economy growing at half the speed of the nation.
Reflecting on Governor J.B. Pritzker’s tenure over eight years, Chesney said there has been an exodus of residents and businesses from Illinois due to fiscal policies. He stated that trust in Springfield is diminished as a result.
Chesney concluded his statement by calling for changes in fiscal policy: “Illinois deserves better. It is time to put Illinois First, stop the reckless spending, cut taxes, and fight for the working families who keep this state alive.”
Chesney was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 45th Senate District in 2023 after replacing previous senator Brian Stewart, according to Senator Chesney’s office.
