Illinois Senate Minority Leader John Curran and State Representative Nicole La Ha announced on April 14 that they will host a free community recycling event for local residents on Saturday, May 9, in Lemont. The event is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to noon at Bambrick Park, located at 1330 Smith Road.
The recycling fair aims to provide an opportunity for families to dispose of difficult-to-recycle items such as old copiers, DVD players, bicycles, documents, and more. Organizers said the event is designed to help residents with spring cleaning while supporting environmental sustainability.
“This is a great event to help families with sustainable spring cleaning,” said Senator Curran. “I encourage all local residents to take a look at our acceptable item list and see what they can unburden themselves with at this free community event.”
Upon arrival, attendees are asked to remain in their vehicles until assisted by an event team member who will collect their items. Participating organizations include E-Tech Trading, Goodwill Industries, S.C.A.R.C.E., Lemont Lions Club, Lemont Police Department, Lemont VFW Post 5819, Beaver Shredding, and Working Bikes. Informational legislative brochures will also be available during the event.
“The Recycling Event is a great way to support our planet, declutter, and connect with other members of the community,” said Representative La Ha. “I look forward to helping local families and our environment at this free event.”
A paper shredding truck will be present for residential document disposal only—limited to two grocery bags per car until the shredder reaches capacity. Other accepted items include bicycles or parts thereof; prescription drugs (to be placed in plastic bags); flags; hearing aids; glasses; gently used household goods or clothing; books; musical instruments; keys; holiday lights; and select electronics. Televisions, CRTs (cathode ray tubes), X-rays, liquids of any kind, appliances, light bulbs or batteries will not be accepted.
Curran was elected as a Republican state senator in Illinois’ 41st Senate District in 2017 after replacing Christine Radogno according to Wikipedia.
The organizers hope that the initiative encourages responsible disposal practices among residents while fostering greater community engagement.
