Seven new associate judges have been named for the Circuit Court of Cook County, according to an April 30 announcement by Marcia M. Meis, Director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.
The selection process matters because it helps shape the judiciary that serves one of the largest court systems in Illinois. The appointment of these judges follows a vote among 265 circuit court judges, who chose from a list of 14 finalists narrowed down from 74 applicants.
Candidates were evaluated by both the Alliance of Bar Associations and the Chicago Bar Association before being interviewed by an eleven-member Nominating Committee led by Chief Judge Charles S. Beach II and his leadership team. The election was conducted in line with provisions set out in the Illinois Constitution and Supreme Court Rule 39, which require twice as many candidates as vacancies to be nominated.
The newly selected associate judges are Matthew J. Canna, Tene McCoy Cummings, Juanishá N. Dotson, Alexander D. Marks, Ginger L. Odom, Nickolas G. Pappas, and Linda Sackey. Each brings experience from various legal backgrounds including private practice and public service roles within Cook County’s legal system.
The Illinois Bar Association promotes diversity, equity and inclusion to foster participation among attorneys and enhance community wellbeing according to its official website.
