Silver Cross Hospital recognized its volunteers on April 19–25 as part of National Volunteer Week, marking 67 years since the hospital’s volunteer program began. The hospital honored hundreds of individuals and organizations whose contributions have supported patient care and the broader community.
The recognition highlights the ongoing importance of volunteerism at Silver Cross Hospital. Volunteers assist patients, families, and staff in more than 35 areas throughout the hospital, contributing over 34,000 hours annually. Their roles range from greeting visitors to running special programs such as Pet Therapy visits and birthday celebrations.
Laura Valencik, Director of Guest & Volunteer Services at Silver Cross Hospital, said, “Our volunteers are the heart of this hospital. Although their roles have evolved over the decades, the compassion and commitment they bring has never changed.” Valencik added that volunteers “are more than just helpers. They are an essential thread in the fabric of Silver Cross. They have stood by us through decades of growth, ensuring that every patient who walks through our doors feels seen, heard and cared for.”
Several longstanding organizations were also recognized for their support. The Advisory Board celebrated its 135th anniversary alongside Encore Resale Shop’s 65th year; together they donated $178,900 this year to support hospital services. Childerguild contributed $560,000 in February to advance Women’s and Children’s Services after more than a century since its founding. The King’s Daughters and Sons continue fundraising efforts for inpatient dialysis services.
Among those honored were Jack Gleason and Marge Persico—two volunteers whose dedication exemplifies service at Silver Cross Hospital. Gleason serves four days a week at age 92 while Persico recently surpassed 11,000 volunteer hours over two decades.
The celebration concluded with a luncheon recognizing all volunteers for their years of dedication—a tradition reflecting both gratitude for past service and hope for continued community involvement.
